I have returned

Twenty-three days, over seven thousand miles, two busted pieces of camping equipment (separate incidents) and three hundred seventy-five spams in the mailbox (ai yi yi!).... but I made it home in a relatively uneventful fashion.

I even have a new project brewing.  I'll describe it if it looks like it's going anywhere.

Comments:
Glad you made it back OK.

Congratulations on a safe return ... while you've been gone ... gas prices have gone up a bit ... the President seems to have come under some criticism ... and let's see, someone has gone through with a text editor and substituted all the q's in "iraq" with n's.

Glad you're back too. I first signed on about two weeks before your road trip. I can't wait to read your upcoming posts. You've got some great stuff. Keep up the good work.

Believe me, odograph, I've been watching the fuel prices a lot; it's hard not to when you drive through as many as five states in a day. ;-)

Search-and-replace errors have a long history; long ago, Dr. Dobb's Journal had a letter from someone whose boss demanded that all occurrences of "and" be replaced with & to save space (in the days before affordable hard drives); this resulted in names like &y &erson.  The editors noted that this was a "gr&st& play", and I'm certain that the bigger the organization, the bigger and subtler the problems will be.

There's a nearly-finished post in the queue, but I hesitate to give a title because I may change the emphasis.  Time to buckle down and write.

Welcome back to the blogosphere, E-P .

You bought carbon offsets to offset all those miles travelled on that trip right...? :)

I haven't totalled the figures yet, but I think I burned less than 180 gallons for the whole 7157-mile tour.  (Interestingly, the weight of the fuel is within the towing capacity of the car; in theory, I could have made the entire trip on nothing but fuel I carried with me.  Coast-to-coast non-stop in this car would be a piece of cake... for the car.  It even climbs mountain passes in top gear without the engine temperature budging from the thermostat set point.)

Now I've got to clean my place up so that I have some space to finish unloading the car and find the leak in the air mattress, finish writing the current piece and maybe one on terra preta, and keep myself from going bonkers with some decent puzzles (yesterday's WSJ crossword is tough enough to keep me distracted for some time).  Oh, and finish the damned taxes.

Just come back from a 2,800km 6-day swing entirely by high-speed rail myself. Isn't France great?
