Interestingly, that's a joke restricted to the United States. It's 14/3/06 here.
Although I suppose we could always celebrate pi day on the 31st April (20)15 at 9am...which demonstrates how few places of pi I can remember...

Just think about what a party they must have had on π day in 1592, right before Torquemada impaled all the mathematicians (a century after his death).
The nice thing about this form is it answers the old high school question: "what is the squareroot of i". e^(pi*i/4) of course.
